Peter C. Newman weighs in on “Robber Baron” and Conrad’s prison publishing
Posted on April 25, 2008 by Douglas Bell
Peter Newman, my colleague and Black scribe extraordinaire, dropped me a line this morning. Always a joy, especially since parts of the message are well worth sharing:
I disagree with everybody about George Tombs’ second book (Robber Baron, ECW Press), which I thought was superb with much new, if sometimes quirky material that deserved a much better reception. I can’t believe that Black would ever be reduced to merely facing the obstruction of justice charge which is real enough but which any properly trained, Kamikaze-inspired secretary could have diverted to herself, instead of becoming the most effective anti-Black witness, next to Babs. I am boggled by his ability to file columns. Stephen Reid tried it…As you know there are mountains and avalanches of other evidence of Conrad’s mishandling of investor’s funds and the sustaining mystery of the trial is why they were not introduced. I find myself sad contemplating Conrad’s fate because his potential for good was so promising. But that’s another story.
Below, I’ve linked to a short piece on the fellow mentioned here—one Stephen Reid, bank robber turned author turned bank robber. Peter raises an interesting point in his e-mail: What are the implications of publishing the work of a convicted felon? For the publication? For the felon himself? I too am boggled and hope to follow up in the next several days.

Here we go again. This blog is becoming more and more like a play in the genre of the theatre of the absurd. Endless repetitions of same old, same old, same old.
Even the fun part, that is to say the hurling of hateful and bitter malice and spite from one side to the other and back again has become the same thing over and over. You would think this crazy bunch could come up with new hateful things to say over and over and over, but they don't.
For a while now, I have been thinking that Casey is a sock puppet of Corey. These two personae have the same agenda, that is to heap insults and abuse on anyone they disagree with. The fact that they appear to be on different sides of the Black debate is irrelevant, a red and green speckled herring if you will.
Since neither of those two personae can be expected to educate themselves about the theatre of the absurd, I will put their responses here, to save them the effort of typing. Just copy and paste the following into your own post:
"The above post by Kafka's Parrokeet is stupid, idiotic, senseless drivel. What a loser."
Fintan, in his on-going exchange of senseless insults with Leaf, has taken a step of genius. He got his family to enter into it. That means that future generations of Finnish Itses will be bragging about how their sleep is not disrupted by the nuisance calls (calls our fun-loving victim clearly invited) made by future Leaves.
But what is Leaf to do in response? Clearly, there is only one possibility. Leaf must go to the island, find the castle, make friends with the crazy mad scientist (the one with the frizzy hair, not the other one) and get him/herself cloned.
Barbara_in_BC April 25, 2008 at 7:10 p.m.
From what I've read, Stephen Reid was motivated by an expensive drug habit to go back to bank robbing. What motivated Conrad Black to steal such enormous sums of money? Both have ruined their lives - was it for the adrenaline rush or for the cash? I am still wondering.

Simple answer to a simple question. Black never stole a dime. Ever.
Lit_200 April 25, 2008 at 8:59 p.m.
Black gave employment to thousands and made thousands for those who invested in his insight.
He raised the 'tone' of journalism worldwide and encouraged both sides of the divide.
He was always a staunch supporter of Canada.
And he married a beautiful, intelligent woman, who aided his magnificent adventure.

KafkasParrokee…. To celebrate your ‘new’ arrival and to feed your need for novelty, I’ll give you something to chew on.
In a post prior to her departure, casey claimed that I was no longer anonymous. Indeed, she volunteered 2 details that were proof enough for me to know she was right.
She’s got my isp. No more, no less.
My response:
Casey, I can’t believe you have outed yourself.
ohhhh the implications…….

You're correct, Lit: he committed fraud; and, while the (justly arrived at) fraud convictions were not for sums in the really big leagues of fraud, they weren't for a dime either.
(The above is a demonstration of applying to Lit's attempt to be succinct Lit's method's of "reading" the posts of those he disagrees with.)

"As you know there are mountains and avalanches of other evidence of Conrad’s mishandling of investor’s funds and the sustaining mystery of the trial is why they were not introduced."
Well put, but I suppose what really matters is that His Lardship and Morticia, who did so much to promote neocon causes at the same time as they made vulgar spectacles of themselves, have now been neutralised.
During the trial, I said I'd be happy if he did even six months in the hoosegow. Main thing is he's a convicted thief and will never again have influence - unless preaching to the neocon converted through columns in a newspaper I had never heard of a year ago counts.
Morticia is likewise reduced to pathetic little self-pitying columns in a magazine whose editor was paid handsomely by His Lardship to delude Morticia into believing anyone gives a sh1t what she opines.
The almost total absence of any mention of them in the UK media is further evidence of what has-beens they have become. When they had wealth and power in the UK, people enjoyed their lavish hospitality (paid for by US investors!) and sn1ggered at them behind their backs. Now they have been openly mocked and soon will have been forgotten. Pathetic, vulgar parvenus.
The fact that he's going to spend an extra five years or so locked up is an added bonus.
Good riddance.
Karma be praised.

Hard-core drivel ahead.
http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs...
Looks like His lardship knows better than his religious leader the Pope, his neocon idol the Chimp and just about everyone else.
Makes one wonder how, if he's so smart, he ended up where he has been for the past 54 days and will remain for the next 1,746 or so - unless he's shanked or tops himself once his appeal fails, the civil suits chip away at him, Morticia deteriorates visibly from one visit to the next - like the portrait of Dorian Grey - and it finally sinks in that no one gives a hoot what he thinks about Iraq or anything else.
You can't screw with karma.

Dull and stupid article by Conrad Black, still carrying water for the neocons. All of these twerps like to pretend that "terrorists" are located in Iraq. Well listen up, all those so-called terrorists are just Iraqis who resent invaders in their land. The American army banging on Iraqi household doors in the night are the true terrorists.
Fintan April 26, 2008 at 1:40 p.m.
Couldn't agree more, Barbara (the attractive and intelligent one in BC who isn't Morticia)!
As Brendan Behan once famously said: "You always know the terrorist; he's the fellow with the small bomb."
Glad you were able to see my 7.40 a.m. post (reposted at 11.48) before it was again removed, but I'll keep on reposting it until I know all of the regulars have seen it. And that' far from the end of what I have in mind. I'm pretty ticked off at TL, who are aiding and abetting a criminal who has threatened my life. Wait till I get in touch with the organ grinder, and I'll post all of that correspondence, too. LOL
Meanwhile, whatever happens in Iraq, His Lardship is still in Coleman. Poor Bubba, having to listen to such a pompous verbose prat really is cruel and unusual punishment.
If you want to see even worse crap, read the article about air travel by Morticia's ex, Jonas, the Hungarian fascist. Maybe those two should get back together. Just be glad they can't breed!
LOL
jade_lee April 26, 2008 at 2:25 p.m.
I still think that a great deal of evidence concerning the frauds was not introduced at CB's trial because the prosecution realized that that evidence would implicate the audit committee members criminal behaviour and open up a larger can of worms. It's one thing to throw CB's arse in jail but it's a whole other ballgame to go after the likes of others who do appear to have real power in America....it's called protecting your own, it was obvious that that was going on when these individuals testified...."I don't recall" is a standard answer all evasive witness' give.....we heard that phrase one too many times from those in the know and possibly guilty themselves of fraudulent behaviour.

jade_lee, I certainly missed your very interesting and informed posts.
Can someone remind me of when CB's appeal is due to wake us all up again?
Also, what about the civil suits? Do they wait until the criminal affairs are all finally settled? Is Peter Newman hinting that there may be civil suits about other CB sleights of hand?
As for that CB article about Iraq and American policy, good grief! We have heard so often about what an intelligent man CB is. If he actually believes what he wrote, he is dumber than a bag of hair. If he wrote that nonsense, doesn't really believe it himself, but thinks his readers will, he's not quite as smart as his readers are. In either case, he's no Einstein.
January April 26, 2008 at 10:07 p.m.
About CB's article, I wish he had included footnotes. I would like to see where he gets his facts. For example, he claimed that half of the New Orlean's police force fled the city, in stolen cars, during the Katrina disaster. And even if that were true, why slam police officers like that? I thought he was a law-and-order type.
Is it possible that prison life is getting to him?

Family_Guy April 27, 2008 at 1:34 a.m.
Hey Jade, been wondering how you've been. I assumed you had found this blog so constipated with vindictive jealousies that you just gave up on it.
Although our master has seen fit to expand topical matters it's really just the same old set of posters. Donna, who now calls herself Denise - no that's wrong, she's Casey, but apparently checked out for good (just like Donna did six months ago)in the last few day's.
Old Raj seems to have gone missing but FlimFlam's still here and as full of it as ever. leaf, Barb from BC and Lit200 post daily and there's a new person, Corey Privatera, who seems in style and other traits (consistent grammatical and spelling errors) eerily reminiscent of old J2B2.
Yeah, I missed you. Doug Bell has opened up discourse to just about anything (or nothing). What do you make of Mr. Harpers "in - out" scheme. Pretty hard to fathom that someone as repeatedly commmited to openness and honesty in gov't could possibly have condoned such a slithery little arrangement, eh?
And what's with the Liberals? Sure Dion seems clumsy in ways but does anyone in this land for a minute think that Bob Rae or Michael Ignatieffe will ever be prime minister?
Now if I was prime minister, first law I would pass would be to outlaw the publication of polls during the course of an election. Parties could poll all they want but from the day the writ is dropped till the votes are counted, no publication.
Sound like a reasonable law?
Over to you, Jade_Lee

Nice to see Jeanne back, too. Just thought I'd tell you all how nice it is to be free on a beautiful sunny spring morning. I'm glad I was never dumb enough to do anything as conducive to a lousy future as stealing from the rich in the USA. LOL
Meanwhile, as I sip a cup of coffee and read the night's posts, His Lardship is in Coleman. It's 1.38 in the morning now and he'll be there for the next 1,744 nights. Bubba still farts and snores a lot, but His Lardship is getting used to the smell and the noise. The aura that wafts around him and his clothes probably gets to Morticia's nose when she visits him, though. Remember her crack about all those smelly people in a London cinema?
I know some people hate me mentioning what a crappy situation those two despicable people are, which is why I do it - over and over again.
January asked about where His Lardship gets his facts. My view is that facts, at least accurate ones, never mattered to him. He has a head full of prejudices. The actual articles may well be written by Morticia or some one of His Lardship's cronies/underlings on the basis of what he outlines to them either during a visit or over the phone.
Main thing is that's he's inside and she is deteriorating visibly by the day.

If we overlook a few minor details like freedom of the media, it's reasonable enough. But probably quite unenforceable in countries like this where fast Internet access is almost universal.

What a delight to sit in the bright sunlight streaming in through my (unbarred) window on this pleasant spring morning and sipping a cup of coffee. This morning I've gone for Mountain Supreme from Nepal. The pleasures of being free, able to choose ... Karma be praised.
Good morning to you, too, Barbara in BC. In answer to your question, I suppose you can figure it out for yourself. Advice, you know ... LOL
Today is an anniversary of a kind. Exactly eight weeks since His Lardship took up residence in the Big House. I bet even one week there is a real drag, and he still has about 268 weeks to go. I wonder do they let him decide which kind of coffee he'd prefer for breakfast? LOL
Let's see what kinds of columns he's writing when and if he emerges from there. Maybe still about Iraq. The war there will most likely still be in progress.
Today is also the day his scofflaw son faces justice in Toronto. Don't be surprised if he turns up with letters of recommendation from everyone from Elton John to that major homophobe Mark the Schweyn, Mother Teresa to the Grand Ayatollah - all testifying to his impeccable character, innate kindness. Then there will be sixteen lawyers defending him and several expert witnesses testifying that the Sri Lankan restaurateur reversed into him at the traffic lights. LOL
Pity he hasn't got daddy any more to tell him the best way to stay out of jail. ROFL
Karma be praised.

I'm just looking through this morning's UK papers. One that His Lardship once "owned" - and which paid millions to Morticia for sipping coffee and bolstering his Lardship's ego - has now forgotten him, but has this impressive article about cushy prisons in the UK.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jht...
Perhaps he should start applying to be transferred back to serve the rest of his sentence (with earlier parole as well) in the country of his citizenship.
At least there the fellow-inmates would know what a Lord is.
And who knows, maybe the Torygraph would give him the odd bit of column space as well.
And people like Thatcher might come to visit him, like she did the late unlamented butcher Pinochet while he was "confined" in the UK.
LOL
Fintan April 28, 2008 at 2:39 a.m.
Sorry, I made an error of calculation in my first post this morning when I wrote this. "I bet even one week there is a real drag, and he still has about 268 weeks to go."
In fact, another up-late blogger just phoned me from the Pacific coast to point out that it should be 278 weeks - assuming he gets the 15% remission for good behaviour. So what's ten weeks in the slammer? Something I'd hate to have to do. LOL
Thanks for the call and putting me right. The mathematician son sure got those genes from his mother's side.
LOL

I find it wonderfully ironic that a certificate for 10 (Ten) Hollinger Inc shares signed by Conrad Black are going for a Buy Now! value of $35 on EBay.
Or $3.50 "per share"
Hollinger Inc. trades for 10 cents per share so by getting his lard butt convicted, His Disgrace, Conrad Lord Black of North of Mudchute, has finally achieved what he could never do before as he plundered and siphoned off 90% of the Hollinger corporate income: increase shareholder value!
This is truly incredible! A cap gain of 3,400%!!!!
Think what he could do with Bud's old Ravelston!

There are laws in some provinces (I don't think Ontario is one) that make it a criminal offence for a convicted felon to profit from a crime by "recounting" the details of the crime. Seems to me there are no criminal implications involved in Conrad writing for newspapers about the Democratic presidential campaign or whatever. But there certainly are ethical implications for the publications running his scribblings.
Barbara_in_BC April 28, 2008 at 3:19 p.m.
BrianB said that in some provinces it's:
"a criminal offence for a convicted felon to profit from a crime by "recounting" the details of the crime."
How about Black's recent article recounting how the US army occupied Iraq under false pretenses? Leading to the deaths of 1 in 40 citizens of that country? Pretending that those who resist occupation are "terrorists". It's all a crime and neocons like Black seek to profit from it. His lies written from a jail cell are beneath contempt.
Fintan April 28, 2008 at 4:17 p.m.
I quite agree, Barbara in BC. People like His Lardship and Morticia are the ultimate terrorists. They advocate and support policies that lead to poverty and deprivation for millions and cost the lives of vast numbers of people.
If there was any real justice in this world, both of them would have been brought before a UN court years ago and made to pay for their unspeakable crimes and greed.
But it's some consolation, at least, that His Lardship will spend the next five years plus in an environment where he has to watch his step, his mouth and his arse every minute of the day and night. Let him write his stupid articles. No one reads them anyway apart from the kind of converted morons who take rags like the Nazional Post seriously. Or people like me, who remember Mao's advice to study the way the enemy thinks so that you can more effectively harm him.
I mean really, has anyone read the crap that Father de Souza writes, even about the Pope? Or seen his mugshot? I've never been an altar boy, but if I was anywhere near him I'd be really nervous. LOL
And the hag Morticia has been effectively defanged as well. Let His lardship write all he wants in prison. The main thing is he's there. And I'll lose no sleep over it if he kicks the bucket there.
Worldly justice, failed to get those two evil people, except nominally in His Lardship's case, but karma got them good.
Karma be praised.
Off to beddy-bye now. Busy day tomorrow.
G'nite all!
Gerard April 28, 2008 at 4:19 p.m.
Oh c'mon Privatera,
Black effed up Massey, money grubbed for Dominion Stores employees' pension fund money while he dismantled the most profitable, highest volume Company in the Canadian grocery industry, and generally effed up everything he fiddled with under MacDougald's once magnificent umbrella.
These things Black did all in order to become a 'Press Baron', feed his over inflated neocon ego and ridiculous lifestyle at shareholder expense, all the while egged on by his spendthrift, "My extravagance knows no bounds" wife, who had the audacity to charge concierge tips to Hollinger. Such class..
Lord Black of North of Mudchute eventually became a convicted felon as sure as Hollinger was once $60 a share.
I find it odd that a convicted felon (Black) is defended by someone who adopts the nom de plume (with the exception of one vowel shift) of another felon, a gangster.

Peter Newman is a washed-up hack who, by his own admission,"makes facts dance."
So he's amazed that Black's opinions are still being published and read (and admired by many of the letter writers to the Post). Tough Ts.
As for his comment that Black's secretary could have taken the bullet and saved him the obstruction charge. Meaning she should have perjured herself on the stand? Nice thinking.

Lit:
Peter C. Newman writes well, about interesting subjects, and has, as a result, a successful career as a writer in Canada. None of those things is true about your hero, Lord Crosstalker. Crosstalker writes like a first-year student who just discovered the Thesaurus, hectors his readers, and is published by what are effectively vanity publishers.
We all know you write those admiring letter about Black to the National Post. You draft them on this blog.
Who said anything about perjury? A true Kamikaze secretary would have managed to get the sensitive material out of that building by herself, knowing that her boss would be in jeopardy if he did it. She would have gone through every box, found anything dicey and spirited out a bundle a day, in her purse, stuffed into her pantihose, or packed into her demure little lunch bag. She would then have filled the gaps in the boxes with useless documents. And she would have kept her mouth shut, AND, as a result, not been faced with perjuring herself either.

Another sunny spring morning, daffodils and even some tulips blooming, leaf buds swelling on the trees, birds chirping and twittering and doing all the other things they do in this verdant part of Helsinki.
How nice to wake up to that, a comparatively poor, but free man, and check the night's posts. Not much except two good ones from Jeanne and Gerard, plus the usual twaddle and paranoid babble and downright unprovable lies from Lit.
Meanwhile, His Lardship is still in Coleman; 1.43 there now and maybe he's asleep. Or maybe, as Bubba snores and farts, he is lying awake wondering how his scofflaw son is getting on in court. He was due to appear there yesterday, but there's nothing in the papers. Has anyone heard anything?
57 days in the slammer already, only 1,743 to go. LOL
Of course, the break from Morticia is probably good for him, but he doesn't realise it yet.
Karma be praised.

Look, Tom Bower's book about C0unt Blackula and Morticia is now on New Zealand's equivalent of e-Bay. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Books/Nonfictio...
Lovely review:
"wannabe aristo" "social mountaineering wife" "gulled their way into the City, the Tory party, Wall Street and High Society" "the machinations of his wife" Barbara Amiel. Together their story of "overweening ambition and greed" " modern-day classic of hubris". "Besotted by his wife" 'outright fraud', 'ethical corruption' and 'corporate kleptocracy'
An excellent text for classroom use. A good teacher like I'm sure Jeanne is could help her pupils do a lot of vocabular building with it.

? Gory, I really have no clue what you are referring to.
Sorry, can't oblige on the "drop dead" bit, either. That's for karma to decide. Neither I nor you should tempt her.

Oh, now I see, Gory thinks I am the author of the Gerard posts.
Well, thanks Gory. Actually I'm rather flattered. Gerard writes excellently. I'd be happy to claim credit for his posts, but I'm satisfied to claim credit for my own and let Gerard receive his deserved kudos for his creative efforts.

fickton and gerard always post in the same time frame.
likewise you won't find posts of either when fickton is sleeping (with one ear open).

fickton pickton..... you do know i will repost, don't you?
...one of these evenings, when you've just gone to bed and are not up to fire an email to your pal at TL, begging him/her to remove leaf's posts.
cries and bravado: fickton's 2 hairy flabby cheeks. in the middle: lies run down dark and dirty.

In response to family_guy
It's nice to be missed and no I have not gone anywhere, I continue to read this blog but rarely do I have much to add to it. The personality clashes appear to have taken it over again.
Your polling ban law would be great if we as people didn't have the need for information and as you know that without the information we usually will make it up which is the reason for gossiping I think. When real information isn't available we rely on false information which is far more dangerous if you ask me because it means we don't make informed choices. I think polls should remain but the message should be stressed that nothing is always what it appears to be,,,,,what happened to making up our own minds based on the facts that we believe to be true? I continue to do just that and it works for me.....I could care less about what other voters do but in fact polling information does give me a clue about what is good or what is bad about the way others in this country elect our political leaders......I am hoping that the Harper conservatives are toast in the next election.
Fintan April 30, 2008 at 2:28 a.m.
Good morning, nothing much added during the night, I see. Jade_Lee mentions on another thread that Black Jr. failed to turn up in court, but I haven't been able to find any report of it in online editions yet.
It looks like there is a deeply-seated belief in that family that they are above the law.
Yet His Lardship has been in the slammer for 58 days. You'd think the message would have sunk in by now. Unless JB had a very good reason for not turning up and supplied the court with, say, a doctor's certificate stating his inability to attend, I hope the court issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
Another of that family in handcuffs would be a sight for sore eyes.
Tomorrow is Vappu, our big spring festival, and for a change it looks like a break with tradition. Instead of cold weather with snow and/or sleet, we have bright sunshine and temperatures possibly over 20 degrees.
This video shows how many people celebrate the festival - getting wasted, but only in the most tasteful way. The white caps are worn by people who have matriculated.
